Sonic the Hedgehog finally has his own full LEGO range, with five sets releasing on August 1 to accompany his existing LEGO Ideas set. The new LEGO Sonic sets are an eclectic mix of ideas, with familiar elements and building techniques from the LEGO City Stuntz, LEGO Friends and even LEGO Minecraft themes creating a range of sets that are about more than just recreating the experience of going fast in a video game.
While the use of Stuntz parts such as a loop and ramps does feel like an obvious, sensible choice, Sonic's speed sphere launcher lacks oomph, making it literally hit and miss to actually try and use it to send Sonic speeding through an obstacle course.
The new Sonic range, then, is best when it focuses on roleplay rather than speed. Thankfully, unlike the LEGO Super Mario range, these new Sonic sets are built in such a way to allow creativity in the way they're played with.
Sonic the Hedgehog fans who are looking for a good display piece are probably better off sticking with the LEGO Ideas set (21331 Sonic the Hedgehog - Green Hill Zone) but for younger fans or anyone who enjoys play, these sets have a lot to offer.
