75341 UCS Luke Skywalker's Landspeeder is the most accurate and detailed version of the famous X34 Speeder LEGO have ever produced, but does it make a worthy entry into the esteemed Ultimate Collectors Series theme?
The Ultimate Collectors Series almost always guarantees a beautifully designed, large scale model that looks incredibly impressive on display, packaged along with some exclusive and desirable minifigures and more often than not generates a lot of anticipation leading up to its subsequent release. On the surface 75341 looks to have achieved at least two of those three things,
It's certainly large scale and the included C3PO minifigure looks like the best version LEGO have ever produced. However when it comes to the excitement levels this set generates there's
Only one way I can sum it up ‘meh’
Perhaps it's LEGO Landspeeder fatigue, perhaps it's the relatively small piece count of just 1890 (especially small for a set that's been designated UCS) or perhaps, more crucially, could it be that LEGO for Adults is diluting the UCS sub theme as a whole.
Previous to LEGO for Adults, Ultimate Collector Series sets were seen as the pinnacle of LEGO design. They were the place to go for mature building techniques, inventive parts usage and accurate, authentic and highly desirable models.
LEGO for Adults has opened up the freedom the designers have to adopt more advanced techniques and parts usage across a multitude of themes and designs, previously withheld for UCS sets and to an extent the Master Builder and Creator Experts series.
With an abundance of inventive, creative and unique sets pouring out of Billund at an impressive rate, us older fans have never had it quite so good. However it poses quite an important question, what is the difference now between a UCS set and a regular 18+ set and has the LEGO for Adults sub theme inadvertently damaged the prestige that UCS models once had?
