Should you buy LEGO Star Wars 75355 Ultimate Collector Series X-wing Starfighter?
Well, that depends on a few factors.
First, and perhaps most importantly: do you need an Ultimate Collector Series X-Wing in your life?
This new set, releasing on May 1st 2023 for LEGO VIPs (and May 4th for everyone else), is the third UCS X-Wing, and the twenty-fifth…ish LEGO X-Wing set, depending on whether you count mini builds etcetera. If you’re a LEGO Star Wars fan, there’s a good chance that you’ve already got at least one X-Wing in your collection somewhere. If you’ve been buying big sets for more than ten years, you might even already have a UCS X-Wing.
In this case in particular, the idea of putting two very similar LEGO X-Wings on display next to each other is going to appeal to some people more than others. The question then becomes: is this new set enough of an upgrade over previous UCS X-Wings to make it genuinely worth adding to your collection?
If you’re hoping for the biggest LEGO X-Wing ever, then this might not feel like a huge improvement over what has come before. The new set measures 55cm in length and 44cm in width, which is hmm… more or less the same size, give or take a few centimetres, as LEGO 10240 Red Five X-wing Starfighter, the previous UCS X-Wing from 2013.
Yes, the new one is a bit bigger, but, again, in terms of centimetres, not parsecs.
As any good Star Wars fan knows, though, size matters not. The new X-Wing’s box boasts a 1,949 piece count, which is nearly four hundred pieces more than the previous UCS set. This means that you can expect a greater level of detail from the new X-Wing, even if the wingspan isn’t drastically different.
Of course, the relative size of the new set is only relevant if you already have a UCS X-Wing. If this is your first time considering one of these sets, then, hey, it’s a no-brainer: this is the big Luke Skywalker starfighter from this point onwards.
At the same time, whether the new set is a substantial enough upgrade if you do have a previous UCS X-Wing will depend entirely on your own personal love of X-Wings and the more modern building elements and techniques introduced in the past ten years.
Do you like scuba flippers? Like, really like them? If so, then this is definitely the X-Wing for you.
